Captain Grant’s, 1754 was built by Captain William Grant in 1754 for his wife Mercy Avery. This home housed three generations of the Grant family.

During the American Revolution, soldiers used the home as a garrison. Its seven foot wide staircase easily moved troops to the third floor.

Captain Grant’s, 1754 is situated in a Connecticut Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Captain Grant’s has undergone extensive but authentic restoration, with some departures from the original for the comfort and convenience of guests. As part of the restoration, the original post and beam construction was exposed after having been covered up in the 1950’s. The ceiling beams, now cleaned and varnished, are in plain view as are the wide board floors which were also refinished.

A seven foot wide staircase to the second floor was rebuilt, having been cut in two and partially destroyed in the 1880’s. Fortunately, the staircase bannisters and spindles, which were stored in the attic for over a hundred years were recoverable, and were refinishable.

Access to four of the bedrooms is via a seven foot wide staircase adorned with a mural depicting Poquetanuck Cove (c. 1825).

As part of the renovation, a modern bathroom was added to each bedroom with no detraction from the colonial flavor of the home. Other modern day amenities are color cable television, air conditioning and complimentary sherry.

The first floor is all common area for the exclusive use of guests and consists of a library, keeping room, dining room, and kitchenette. Guests are permitted to use the kitchenette to make tea or coffee and also offer complementary wine in the refrigerator. The dining room is used to serve hearty candlelit breakfasts each morning.
