Elsa’s Inn is the newest full service Maine Bed & Breakfast on the Schoodic Peninsula in Downeast Maine.

Built in a working fishing harbor on the Gouldsboro peninsula, our newly renovated inn has the charm of the mid-1800’s with the comfort of the new millennium.

We are conveniently located to numerous area galleries, shops, restaurants, antique shops, lighthouses, as well as trips to Camden to the south, New Brunswick, Canada to the north and many other charming Maine towns in between. We look forward to welcoming you as our guests.

Carroll and Elsa Alley purchased their home in 1955 and there raised their four children Julie, Jeffrey, John and Jane. All married and with children of their own, their children left home to come back again and again. There was always family filling the Alley home.

Carroll was a lobster fisherman, captain of the Elsa Louise. Their home, across from the harbor, was convenient for him.

In the early morning Elsa awoke to sounds of the boats leaving for the day, and in the evening she watched them steam home with the days haul.

On days when inclement weather kept the fishermen on dry land, many would gather around Elsa’s kitchen table where a hot pot of coffee and storytelling was commonplace. Elsa sat listening and cutting patchwork pieces for the quilts she made for the whole family.

Each guest room is named for family. Elsa’s room is surrounded by rooms named for her daughters and grand daughters. Decorated in Elsa’s old-fashioned style, flowered wallpaper, hand made quilts, gardens full of flowers and a full cookie jar are among the many touches which remind the grandchildren of Grammie.

Called “the perfect place for a party” by several of our guests, Elsa’s is a suitable venue for small receptions, anniversary and birthday parties, wedding rehearsal dinners or brunches.

Our backyard patio offers water views and a direct view to the historic Prospect Harbor Lighthouse. In addition Elsa’s public areas include a sunny dining room, cozy parlor and covered veranda with seating for as many as sixteen people.

With six guest rooms each with a private baths and water view Elsa’s can sleep up to sixteen guests. We welcome area caterers or may be able to meet you menu needs ourselves.

While you are planning your vacation to our area, we invite you to join us for a traditional, downeast lobster bake on our backyard patio - weather permitting.

Rates and Policies

Open year round, our rates range from $90.00-$155.00.
All rates are based on double occupancy.
Additional guests over the age of 12 will be charged $25.00 per night.
Rates do not include Maine’s lodging tax, currently 7%.
To avoid a charge, cancellations must be made seven days prior to arrival. Should you cancel within seven days you will be charged for your entire stay unless we are able to resell the room which you reserved.
Should you opt to leave earlier than your original departure date, you will be charged for nights reserved unless we are able to resell your room.
Check in time is from 3pm-6pm. If you plan to arrive later than 6pm you must make arrangements in advance. If you do not arrive by 6pm we reserve the right to sell your room to another guest.
Payment for your entire stay will be due on arrival.
We accept cash, traveler’s checks, personal checks, Visa and MasterCard.
Please check out by 11am so that we may prepare for our arriving guests.
