A traditional New England farmhouse, it’s become our personal artists' retreat; its rooms are filled with music, paintings and photographs, and books beckon wherever there’s space. But all life around here congregates in the kitchen – at Le Vatout the hearth is at the center, it is its heart. Outwardly, it’s nothing special, just a big old kitchen last upgraded years ago, no fancy fixtures, no polished granite, no industrial strength sink. What matters at Le Vatout is not appearance, what matters here is soul. Meals at Le Vatout have substance, flavors have a twist, and old-fashioned conversation reigns as Dominika has a way with herbs and with words and knows when to serve either.
Whether you crave the quiet pleasure of a cup of tea and a bowl of fresh fruit on the porch, favor a communal breakfast of paper-thin buckwheat pancakes served at the dining table flooded with sun or simply want to hang out at the kitchen island, dig into a crabmeat omelet and chat, at Le Vatout everything’s just different enough to delight.

Le Vatout has four guestrooms. Like our feathered friends after whom we’ve named them, they’re unprepossessing and homey, with flashes of decoration that will delight you every time you stay.The beds are good - we've tried them out ourselves - and in the winter we provide you with flannel sheets and hot water bottles. |
Hypoallergenic pillows and thick, soft towels are guaranteed year-round. Each room has comfortable chairs and reading lamps and is filled with art and books and found objects. There's a small TV in the kitchen, so you won't have to miss out on sports and the news, and wireless internet access thoughout the building.
Warm and bright, with three windows, two of which let in the evening sun, the Goldfinch (pictured above) is on the ground floor. It is the former parlor of the house, has elaborate moldings, a private bathroom and a walk in closet. The bed, a beautiful mahogany four-poster family heirloom is a traditional full, but sleeps two people comfortably. Rates: June 12 to Oct 20: $119, off-season: $99
The Warbler perches right above the Goldfinch, high up under the eaves, it is the perfect hideaway. Its queen-sized sleigh bed invites you to curl up with a good book and its little library might inspire you to sit at your desk and write. It shares a bathroom with the Chickadee and the Nuthatch, the other two rooms on the second floor. Both, the Chickadee and the Nuthatch, have two single beds each, old fashioned built-ins and original wide pine floors. They have southern exposure and sunlight streams in through their windows almost all day long. Rates: June 12 to Oct 20: $95, off season: $85

A short walk from the village, Le Vatout hides behind its trees; like most special things in life it’s easy to miss. Store your gear, your bikes and your skis in the garage (it’s that wheathered old building, obscured by the blooms of a climbing hydrangea) and step inside for a spell. The garden is lovely, huge, romantic and totally private with plenty of nooks and crannies where you can relax, write, read a book or simply snooze in the hammock.
After a day of exploring the shoreline there’s nothing better than to fire up the stove in the sauna in back or to sit around the table under the weeping willow, drink lemonade and play cards. A grape-trellised tea house invites you to linger, a giant elm tree tempts you with an old-fashioned tire swing, and there’s always a refreshing breeze from the water which will relax and reinvigorate you at the same time.
At Le Vatout, your options to enjoy your vacation are as limitless as your imagination with nature’s surprises thrown in for free – like one of the resident eagles you might spot circling high above or a trilling flock of bohemian waxwings that favor our wild roses – and at night you can count the stars.

Centrally located in Waldoboro, on the craggy shoreline of Mid-coast Maine, Le Vatout is just twenty minutes from Rockland, the Farnsworth and its famed Andrew Wyeth and Louise Nevelson collections, and two seconds away from nature. Artists, bring your laptop, your camera or your easel, birders your binoculars. Stargazers, there’ll be nothing between you and them. All others bring your bikes, your bathing suits, your snowshoes, your hiking boots and cross country skis and, most importantly, your open mind. | We try to run LeVatout as a green inn. We recycle and use environmentally safe cleaning products, CFL bulbs and bulk dispensers for soap and shampoos. Sheets and towels are re-used and only changed every three days - unless, of course, you request a change sooner - and our laundry features energy efficient front loaders. We compost every scrap of organic matter. Our garden and its herbs and produce are organic. Bread and eggs are locally produced and the house is smoke-free. |
