The Hermannhof Winery Story
Hermannhof's ten magnificent stone cellars and charming brick superstructure are among the 100 early Hermann buildings placed on the National Register of Historic places by the Federal government. Construction of a brewery/winery commenced in 1848 and was completed in 1852 in the French section of Hermann. Hermannhof's wine making was initially a small part of this very successful brewery. By 1904, the Hermann area produced 3 million gallons of wine, most of which were produced by small wine growers, many of whom utilized the facilities of Hermannhof. Prohibition began a forced long sleep for Hermann with the vineyards being uprooted and the equipment destroyed or sold to Europeans. In 1974, the Hermannhof Cellars were purchased by the Dierberg family and renewal began.
Today, all the cellars are utilized in premium wine production of 15,000
cases. These historic cellars contain casks made from white oak from the forests of France
and Missouri. Here the wine continues to improve with age until it is dispatched to bring
joy and sunshine to connoisseurs. Other cellars are employed in the making of sparkling
wine in the original "méthode champenoise".
Grapes becoming wine is a natural process. Hermannhof is
designed to preserve the grapes' natural character and quality. To make Hermannhof
wines the most natural to exist, the winery not only utilizes the latest equipment and
methods, but has provided funding, equipment, and personnel that have attained national
recognition in original viticulture and enological research.
This dedication to quality has enabled Hermannhof to become the first two-time winner of the Brown-Foreman Trophy for "Best New World White Wine", along with numerous other awards . |
Welcome to
the new Dierberg - Star Lane - Three Saints Tasting Room
Come join us at our new Three California Vineyards Tasting Room to experience The Dierberg
Family of Wines. Daily wine tastings of Award Winning Dierberg - Star Lane - Three Saints
wines are now available in Hermann.
Dierberg Estate Vineyards lie very close to the Pacific
Ocean in California's Central Coast wine region. The vineyards provide both Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay for Dierberg Estate
wines. In 1997, Mary and Jim Dierberg planted the first vineyard near the town of Santa
Maria. Seven years later, they planted a second vineyard in what is known as Drum
Canyon, south of Santa Maria, in the Santa Rita Hills. Our
coastal environment provides a combination of sunny days, maritime breezes and well
drained soils, perfectly suited to cool climate viticulture.
Star Lane Vineyards located at the far eastern end of the Santa
Ynez Valley, is both the warmest and the highest elevation vineyard in the
appellation. Backing up to the lower slopes of the San Rafael Mountains,
which loom high above the ranch, Star Lane unfolds itself in its
own pristine valley. Traveling 22 degrees North by North East the Star Lane
vineyard blocks climb from the canyon floor to the benchlands above and, ultimately to the
highest mountain tops sites-each area contributing a unique element to the resulting
wines.
Three Saints wines are a vivid expression of carefully selected
grapes from the Dierberg Family's vineyards which are located in three of
Santa Barbara County's premium wine growing regions: Santa
Maria Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley.
The California Tasting Room is located to the left of the Hermannhof Winery at 338 E. First Street.
