Surrounding the house are wildflowers, roses, dogwood, cherry trees, and the rhododendrons and azaleas for which Plainfield is famous. You have found a place to relax, hold a joyous outdoor wedding, or enjoy a picnic with family and friends in complete prvacy.

Once inside, in the Grand Foyer, you're greeted by a handsome circular staircase winding up three stories to a stained glass skylight. Imagine a bride coming down those stairs to the strains of Lohengrin! Off the foyer you'll find The Music Room, with its nautical theme, woodburning fireplace, organ, stereo and game table; The Living Room, a comfortable place to relax and borrow a book from the library or watch a bit of cable TV; and, of course, The Dining Room, its eight oversize windows sparkling with colored glass. Here you can enjoy a grand breakfast with your complimentary morning newspaper and a cheerful "good morning" from your hosts.

All second floor suites have private baths with Alsons showers, hair dryers, terry robes, lots of extra pillows, work/game tables and air conditioning.

From in-room fireplaces to deep luxurious tubs to soak in, your lodging experience at The Pillars will be second to none.

The Pillars was built in 1870 and added onto in 1896. Each room is designed to reflect a popular interest or theme during our home's heyday, from the 1870s through the 1930s. Guests often find themselves attracted to the personality of a particular room and return to their favorite, time and again. We hope you find your personal favorite as well.

After a restful night’s sleep, meander to our dining room or front porch where you will be served a decadent breakfast that will give you the energy you need for a fun-filled day of sightseeing.

A laundry and kitchen are also available for your convenience. The John Philip Sousa Suite features dark cherry furnishings, a queen-size bed, and private dressing room. The red, white and blue "Stars and Stripes Forever" decor honors the March King, who held his first concert in Plainfield over a century ago, and is still remembered with an annual Fall Sousa Festival. The Van Wyck Brooks Suite is decorated with cherry furnishings, queen-size brass bed, and an oversize working fireplace in memory of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author; The Clementine Yates Suite features wicker furnishings, ruffled curtains and a queen-size bed in memory of the lady who renovated the house in 1897.

What could be better, and more picturesque, than a Victorian house with gardens, a wide front porch, and cozy fireplaces as the location for your Central New Jersey wedding, family reunion, or even a corporate event? We hold a number of indoor and outdoor weddings and receptions at The Pillars each year, ranging in size from 15 to 150 people. The styles of our celebrations vary, from a front porch afternoon tea, to a small cocktail party, to a Texas-style BBQ under a tent in the back. Our facilities are beautiful when dressed up and formal, but they are equally appealing for a relaxed home-style gathering.
