| Where the Missouri River courses through central South Dakota, the prairies of the
Midwest meet the grasslands of the Western plains. East of the Missouri--or
"east river," as South Dakotans say--lie flat, fertile farmlands of oats, hay,
flaxseed, and corn. "West river," rolling pasturelands are dominated by cattle
ranches. In the far west rise the forested Black Hills, the nation's primary source of
gold. In the southwest, the pinnacles and buttes of the barren Badlands are swept by
eroding winds and rains. South Dakota is a popular family vacation destination with
many a welcoming bed and breakfast inn, farm or ranch B&B, homestay bed and breakfast,
historic hotel, country inn or lodge, or urban inn. |
| In addition to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, other popular stops are Custer State
Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Deadwood, the Worlds Only Corn Palace, Badlands National
Park, Fort Sisseton Historic State Park, Wall Drug and Lewis and Clark Recreation Area. In
De Smet, visitors can still tour the childhood homestead of beloved Little House on
the Prairie author Laura Ingalls Wilder. Pierres Cultural Heritage Center
houses the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society, which preserves the
history of the State of South Dakota and Dakota Territory. So visit South Dakota and
while staying at a South Dakota bed and breakfast don't hesitate to ask the knowledgeable
innkeepers for their travel tips. |
