Surrounded on three sides by salt water, The North River Inn sits majestically on 100 acres of Virginia countryside in the historic Tidewater region off the Chesapeake Bay. 

Known as the cradle of our nation, Virginia is steeped in tradition and history. You'll find plenty to discover right outside your door. The river and creek provide the perfect setting for walks, as well as explorations in our canoes. There's even a walled 18th century garden for you to enjoy, and down the lane our rare 18th century icehouse to visit.

Established as the 17th century estate of sea captain Thomas Todd, these broad fields stretching down to the tidal river have been farmed for more than 350 years. Toddsbury, the original home on the property, is a National Register and Virginia Historic Landmark house, which today serves as the private home of the Montague family who own and operate the Inn.

An avenue of towering red maples serves as your welcoming committee at the North River Inn.

The North River Inn is housed in three distinct historic structures, each on a different location on this 100-acre estate. Our historic Virginia inn property includes the Creek House, Toddsbury Cottage, and Toddsbury Guest House. All are on the water, at the ends of private lanes, with exquisite views and river access. Every room offers its own ambiance and appeal, with 18th and 19th century English and American family antiques, private baths, air conditioning, and telephones. From a single room to a complete house, from an intimate honeymoon guesthouse all to yourself to facilities for meeting groups up to twenty, we can tailor our accommodations to fit your needs. Every morning during the week, you'll be treated to fresh fruits and locally baked muffins and breads, along with piping hot gourmet coffee. On the weekends, indulge yourself in an authentic, hot, southern breakfast, cooked to order. It is the perfect way to begin your day.

For Groups and Meetings:

  • The North River Inn is the ideal setting for meetings and groups up to twenty people. Privacy, and our ability to tailor our accommodations to fit your needs, assure a perfect retreat.
  • Our large library-meeting room easily seats twenty people at tables. Telephones and FAX are available, as is a fully outfitted kitchen, and all-day coffee and cold drinks. Our handsome sitting-dining room serves as an adjunct meeting and "breakout" room to the primary conference room.
  • The North River Inn offers several miles of quiet walks for conversation and discussion -- along the shore . . . down our country lanes . . . to our rare 18th century ice-house . . . inside our 18th century walled garden, a full acre-square.

Out here, where the land meets the water and the present meets the past, you'll have a rare glimpse of life as it once was in rural Virginia . . . unhurried, gracious, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Policies
  • Advance reservations are required. There is a two-night minimum for weekends and holidays. Room rates based on double occupancy per night, are subject to change without notice, and exclude taxes.
  • A credit card number or receipt of a deposit within seven days of reservation is required to hold rooms.
  • We accept Master Card, Visa, Travelers Cheques, personal checks, and cash.
  • Discounts available for stays over three days and for Sunday-through-Thursday stays.
  • CANCELLATION POLICY
    For cancellations prior to two weeks of arrival date, we will refund the twenty-five percent deposit in full, less a $25.00 handling fee. For cancellations under two weeks, we will charge for the whole stay, and also issue a gift certificate for the same amount, good for use within a year.
  • CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT
    Check-in time is from 3 to 7 p.m., or by prior arrangement with the hosts. Check out time by 11 am
  • BREAKFAST
    A generous Continental breakfast is provided in your house Monday through Friday. A full Virginia Country breakfast is served on weekends. Please let us know of any special dietary requirements at the time of your reservation.
  • OTHER PARTICULARS
    Corporate rates and catering are available for meetings.
    We are an irreplaceable antique. Sorry, no smoking.
    We cannot accommodate pets.
    Well-behaved children over 12 are welcome in all quarters, younger children by prior arrangement in the Cottage.
    Canoes are available for $25 per day.
